User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars So far, so good!
This shredder has operated flawlessly so far. It shreds the advertised amount of sheets and seems to be fairly quiet as shredders go. I like the casters as it allows it to be pushed back into a tight space while not in use and then pulled out when using. It is also a nice looking piece of equipment that fits with our decor. I would recommend this unit and would not think twice about purchasing it again.

5 Stars Heavy Duty Shredder
I have owned 4 paper shredders in the last 25 years. This unit is beatiful and very rugged. The nice motor runs quiet and does not strain while shredding. The power on button is illuminated in blue. It can be a little distracting at night. It appears very safe if little children play near it.

4 Stars Great Shredder, but Extra Features are Useless
As a shredder, this thing does an amazing job … but their “paper-thickness” sensor is total garbage. It’s supposed to prevent you from overfilling the shredder slot, but it won’t even allow you to shred a single envelope with a credit card application. And as your document wavers back and forth as it goes into the slot, this sensor over-estimates how thick it is. Fortunately, you can disable this feature … which I did … and once disabled, the shredder quietly chews through what it should. I’d recommend it … but you need to know you’re paying for features that you’ll need to turn off.

3 Stars Shreds great, designed not-so-hot
This thing will shred your documents and other media no problem. My issue with the product is not the shredder, but what happens after shredding. For some inane reason, the bin below the shredder has two sharp plastic prongs that point inward into the bag area.

When you try to take out the plastic bag that collects all the shreds, those two plastic prongs tend to rip the bag. I like to stuff the bag pretty solid whenever the unit tells me the bag is full. The downside is that you can’t take it out without it ripping because of those two prongs, thus giving you a giant mess. I end up having to re-bag the special bag that is ‘custom’ made for this unit.

Overall the unit shreds great but is ruined by two idiotic plastic prongs that rid the collection bag. You’ll have to be careful taking the bag out each time, or just replace the bag when it is only partially full.

5 Stars Quiet Shredder!!
If you are looking for a good personal shredder for home use, this is a great choice. It’s a little pricey, but has many great features. It shreds 12 sheets per pass as well as CD’s and credit cards. It has two power switches and a system which detects when hands are too close to the paper entry slot resulting in the shredder shutting off; both of which are great if you have little ones around. It has very quiet operation, a feature I really wanted, as my last shredder would wake the neighbors. It is jam proof, has an ample shred bin and casters for great maneuverability. If your looking for quiet operation, this would be a good choice.

D Link DSD 150 SecureSpot Internet Security Adapter

D Link DSD 150 SecureSpot Internet Security Adapter

To combat the alarming number of annoying and potentially disastrous security breaches to the home or small office, D-Link brings you the first desktop Internet Security Device (ISD) that provides multi-tiered protection for all networked PCs against viruses, spam, spyware, pop-ups, hackers and other privacy invasions while operating under a single integrated, easy-to-use web-based control center.

D-Link SecureSpot performs multiple security functions with a single plug-and-play device and a web-hosted control center, putting an end to the need for consumers to select, buy, and integrate disparate stand-alone firewalls, pop-up blockers, reporting applications, content and spam filters and antivirus protection. SecureSpot consolidates firewall, antivirus, intrusion detection, content filtering, pop-up and spyware killers into one small device. Powered by BSecure Technologies, all product functions operate under one Web-managed system that provides protection for the home or small office network and attached Windows or OSX-based computers. D-Link SecureSpot is designed to make users’ personal choices in content filtering easier, safer, more reliable and faster – it will not slow down Internet traffic. Support for all Windows 98 and higher operating systems, and Macintosh OSX 10.3 and 10.4

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Great to protects whole network
I have 9 computers in a den that kids are on all the time. The fear is that when they figure out how easy it is to find adult content, Pandora will forever be out of the box. Installing parental controls on 9 computers would be expensive and time consuming.

Some reviews criticize the thin client software: well then forget it. As an appliance that protects your whole network, including wireless Nintendo DSi browsers, Wii browsing, netbooks and wired boxes, this product is tremendous. I’ve worried for years about what I’d do when they figure out that a few letters in a search engine results in adult content. This product completely took that worry away from me.

This product is their old version to implement Securespot. D-Link’s Securespot version 2.0 works in the firmware of this product if you update it and D-Link routers but ONLY on 3 models. The DIR 625, 628 or 655. They are reasonably priced too.

You can pick from many categories of sites to prohibit. In addition to porn, you can block hate sites, piracy sites, hacker sites etc.

This is not a comprehensive big brother product like netnanny. You only get emails about attempts to get to prohibited content and no protection from kids behavior in email or messaging. But to act as a blacklist filter for your kids from the millions of sites that you would prohibit, it’s the only product on the market that does this.

Installation was a little bit of a pain but D-Link is the only parental “whole network” appliance or router supplier out there. I wish they all (Linksys, Netgear etc.) offered this but they don’t.

3 Stars A first step towards centralized network security…
D-Link’s Securespot is a step towards centralized home network security … but doesn’t live up to their marketing.

I want to offload the security burden from my individual computers and centrally manage them. After using Securespot for 2 months I can say it’s a step in that direction, at least for the central management.

Installation was straightforward. The instructions and manual are on the CD. Installation is 11 simple steps and I made it to #8 before things didn’t work. After a detour to update firmware I was able to finish per the instructions and get up and running.

D-Link claims 3 layers of security but it appears more like 1 layer of Control Center managing 2 layers of actual security – the software layer running on up to 4 assigned MS Windows computers and the “little black box with flashing lights” layer now hooked to my network router. We can add additional assigned computers by paying extra.

The Control Center lets us configure our security options using a browser based portal. This is nice, it takes a while to figure out the details and I’ll leave the explanation to D-Link’s website and manual. Although D-Link says “Protects all devices including game consoles” I can’t seem to figure out how to add systems that don’t (or can’t) run the thin client, like my media server (linux) and game systems, so I guess only default security options apply to those systems which creates some troublesome website filtering limitations.

I get the impression that the “thin client” software required for each computer we want protected and managed isn’t so thin. One clue is the “with McAfee VirusScan” message when it starts up. That is followed by a couple minutes of incredible lag while it does whatever it does behind the scene. Apparently each computer still runs it’s own software with virus checker and that part isn’t offloaded. Just hidden. The virus definition updates automatically and you can schedule the time the virus scan will run to be daily, weekly, or monthly – you will notice the performance hit when it’s running.

Website filtering is where it works best. Using the Control Center you begin by choosing from general categories. Then you can customize further if desired to tune to what you want. After configuring the top level you can customize each of your assigned computers. For example, I have kids, so I used the recommendation provided for their age range as the default for my network as a whole. Easy – a pre-configured set of safe categories. Then at the overall default level I re-allowed some sites that were blocked but that I know have age filters set for my kids (like google and yahoo) and I unblocked some other sites that are mis-categorized. Then for my own computers I set the adult range and re-blocked some categories I’m not interested in. For my wife and I, I’ve had to unblock a handful of sites like crafts and game sites that for some unknown reason were categorized as porn. So expect to make the occasional tweak. Another nice feature – you can set up your email address to get a notice when someone tries to access a blocked site. Note that this is by computer and not by user. If I use the kids computer I get their filters and vice versus.

Early on, I wondered why all of this couldn’t be done with my existing D-Link router, which has the capability to do the same functions. Just not easily. Apparently it can. Several newer D-Link routers can have their firmware updated to support Securespot without the added hardware widget. The cost for that is $60 (I assume per year) for network coverage with 3 assigned computers running the virus checker. Or, you can get the website filtering without the thin client (I’m not sure how or if customization works for that) for $30. More info can be found on the D-Link website by chasing the securespot links. Given the choice, I would have gotten the basic filtering and kept a better virus checker.

There is an email spam feature but after 3 weeks and much opportunity it hadn’t flagged a single spam email. I turned it off. It seems rudimentary and my email utility does a good job.

I’ve had some glitchy performance, but nothing tragic.

So overall, I dinged them stars for the rough edges, glitches, not being able to manage a system well without running the thin (fat?) client software on it and the mediocre virus checker.

1 Star I rate it 1/100
This thing is not what it seems. The “AntiVirus” feature is actually software that runs on your computer and is not nearly as good as real AntiVirus software. The only thing this really does is content filtering (adult sites, etc.) and a firewall. You don’t need a firewall since it is a very basic firewall that your router, Windows and AntiVirus software already do a million times better.

This product is meant for family and BEGINNERS in networking. And I mean beginners. No advanced person would put this thing near their network. I trashed it and I wouldn’t even give it away. Worthless.

So basically we are left with content filtering which is a good feature I guess. But the problem is the device keeps trying to get you to buy upgrades and these upgrades are more software. Also, like I said this thing is meant for beginners but configuring it is pretty advanced. If you don’t know what a port is, you will have to learn. So it is basically an advanced device that doesn’t do anything meant for beginners. No one should buy it.

You know that pass through RJ45 port for surge protection on your surge protector or UPS, well this thing is the same thing. The only thing it is good for is to take a bullet for your other useful equipment. The problem again, with that, is that as it pretends to look at packets it can actually slow down your internet. As where a UPS or surge protector won’t.

4 Stars So far so good.
So far the product has delivered as promised. it block by IP address and url link. There is a little problem with the instructions not mentioning that firewalls in the computers have to be disable but they forget to mention firewalls in the internet routers. It took me a lttle while to figure out what was the problem but this is not rocket science. By the way, the $[...] dollars rebate puts the price for the first year very reachable for the average home user. I like it so far. +++++

1 Star Too good to be true
Well as they say, if it sounds to good to be true, then it probably isn’t. They say it doesn’t slow down your network, they’re right it doesn’t slow it down, it brings it to a halt, a modem is faster. If you use web-mail, you can kiss good-bye ever reading that again. It loads a TON of software on your PC. The instructions say to call if you’re having issues, but there’s no number, and they don’t respond to emails. Maybe I can use it as a paper-weight. On the ratings scale Amazon needs half a star, a full star is clearly over-rating this.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Does its job
I use it for light to mid range shredding and it works really well for me. My credit card was about to expire, they sent me a new one, and it had no problem destroying my old one.

3 Stars Not worth the price.
I researched many consumer recommended websites & this shredder stood out amongst home/home office shredders. It claims that it can shred 11 sheets per pass, but my shredder almost stopped with 9 sheets & I didn’t want to push it by trying 10 since I needed to reverse it to get the paper out. Also, the shredder is REALLY REALLY loud! It is very irritating. The nice things about this shredder is the ease with which you can get rid of the confetti trash. Also, as for shredding, it does a very good job. Overall, if you can spend a little less (most other decent shredders cost $60-$70), I would recommend you do that.

2 Stars 16 Months to Failure
I purchased this shredder in Jan 2008 and ran it under very light conditions for 16 months. Mostly, it was used to shred bills, paystubs, and the occasional credit card entreaty.

Recently, I was shredding a four sheet document when it started to clang and stopped working. Right now, the feeder no longer pushes the paper forward so the shredder no longer functions. Furthermore, it makes an awful racket every time the shredder turns on. Basically, the thing is toast. Extensive oiling has made no difference.

Before the shredder failed, I had a few problems. It was easy to overfill the bin, so when you went to remove it, paper shreds went flying everywhere. But overall, it was a good machine — til it failed.

5 Stars Good home shredder
I got this shredder Winter 2007-08 and it’s been running strong, sorry to hear that some people had problems with theirs. It’s sturdy enough for shredding several sheets at a time and the size is such that we only have to empty it every couple months or so. Now that I’ve started gardening I’m going to toss the paper bits into the compost pile. Just be sure to oil it once in awhile so the teeth don’t break.

3 Stars great shredder
This is a great product. What an improvement over my old shredder. Wish I had bought it sooner. A great addition to my home office.

Fellowes Powershred P 58Cs Shredder 3225901

Technology, a built-in safety feature that stops the shredder immediately when hands are too close to the paper opening. Shreds up to 9 sheets per pass into 5/32″ x 2? cross-cut particles as fast as 11 feet per minute. Equipped with an 8-3/4″ paper entry, the P-58Cs easily accepts letter or legal size documents, and features durable steel cutters that accept credit cards, envelopes, staples, and paper clips. Space-saving design with 5-gallon wastebasket. Auto start/stop feature ensures quick, easy shredder operation.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Poor design
This shredder does shred, but suffers from a design flaw. The clear viewing window is nice to see when its getting full, but its part of the top and not the can. This means when you take the top off to empty it the front is lower than the rest of the bucket and shredded paper spills out the front.

My first P-58Cs also failed within the first couple of months under very little use. The auto shut off feature quit working and it ran continuously. Fellowes did stand behind there product and provided me with a new one, no questions asked.

Fellowes gets an A for customer service, but an F for this particular model.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars IT IS A MONSTER!
I come from a big company environment where we had big shredders and people to do the shredding. After retirement, I bought two different “big box” office supply branded shredders. They were always jammed. In frustration, while trying to clean out years of personal information, I carried them to the garbage swearing and vowing never to buy cheap equipment again. (Actually they weren’t inexpensive, just cheaply built.)

The next day I read reviews shopped around and bought the PS-60. It is a monster! I thought it performed as well as my old office shredders, it hardly choked. I did jam it with 14 sheets of heavy paper, but I can feed 10 sheets at a time until the bin is full and never jam it. Highly recommend.

5 Stars Great Product
This is a most wonderful product. We brought two shredders previously and stopped working for being use a few times. This shredder worth to pay a little more and knowing is dependable. We had shredded more than 20 years paperwork due to down sizing. I am sure this one will help us to go for many miles longer. Highly, highly recommanded. A very very happy owner of this product.

5 Stars Bags and Bags of items to shred
I had bags and bags of things to shred but was waiting to invest in a good shredder. I finally decided to purchase one and I love it. I was shredding all day on Saturday and now I’m happy to say I have no more bags. The shredder work very well and I have no complaints. I would highly recommend you purchase it. Unless your looking for a confetti type of shredder but that was too complicated for me.

2 Stars I wish I hadgone to the store
I pruchased the PS-60/PS-65c, but when I got it home I was sorry I had not gone to the store instead of mail order. I had a previous Fellowes shredder in which the paper dumped in a basket. When the basket was full one pulled it out horizontally snd emptied it. With the new replacement one has to lift off the top which contains the heavy motor and blade assembly to empty the bin. At 88 yrs I don’t need that. As a shredder it is fine, giving parellel slices from quiet smooth operatin, If I had had a better, closer look I would have seen that and avoided the heavy lifting. May be fine for a heavyweight, although I would not have wanted it at any time. It has turned out to be a real hassle BB

4 Stars Good shredder, but
I’ve had this shredder about a month and have used it quite a bit shredding old documents (I’ve emptied the basket about a dozen times). The shredder appears to be pretty much everything that I thought it would be compared to the cheap shredders I’ve had in the past. It’s certainly more substantial and quieter. My only regret is that I didn’t spend a extra $20 for the similar Fellowes model that confetti cuts instead of the strip cut on this model. The basket fills up very fast with the large strip cuts made by this machine and I believe that a confetti cut machine would allow more paper to be shredded before the basket needs to be emptied. The trade off between the strip cut and confetti cut machines, as I understand, is that the confetti machines require a shredding oil to be used occasionally and the strip cut machines don’t.

5 Stars Anyone concerned about their privacy, should own one of these.
NRZDD3001 Data Destroyer, CD/DVD Data Shredder, Processes up to 15 Disks/Minute

I purchased this item on 3/8/2008 & received it on 3/12/2008. It’s everything it’s advertised to be. It waffels both sides of the DVD or CD destroying the data & rendering them unreadable. It’s relatively quiet & compact, taking up little room on a desk. It’s simple to use & the fact that it doesn’t actually shred the CD/DVD’s causing a mess, is a plus. No more protective eyewear & work gloves. Also, the price is right. I highly recommend this product.

5 Stars DO NOT BUY
do NOT buy if you have small children in the house. do NOT NOT NOT. ended up being the costliest gadget I ever bought.

5 Stars Perfectly destructive!
I received this item a week ago and am very pleased with it. The only downside I have found is that when it first pops what I assume is the seal over the CD/DVD, the resulting noise is a VERY loud POP for such a little machine! Suggestion: Wear headphones and listen to music while you use it!

Otherwise, it is perfect! Discs are perforated with numerous little holes; data recovery would be nearly (or perhaps totally) impossible. After running my discs through this, I have no qualms about throwing out my old discs from backup sessions.

*Note* Do not expect it to shred your CDs/DVDs the way paper shredders do. They will still be entirely round, but top and bottom will be -very- perforated!

5 Stars CD/DVD Data Destroyer
This product really works and does a great job at a low cost.Norazza Incorp Data Destroyer CD/DVD Data Shredder, Processes up to 15 Disks/Minute DD3001 / NRZDD3001

5 Stars CD/DVD Data Destroyer
Product works very well. Fits quite nicely on the desk, a rather small footprint compared to some devices. It is very quick and takes just a few seconds to destroy the data on the disk. It is much better and cleaner than a device that shreds DVDs/CDs. I have used both types and prefer this method over any others. I tried to read the data back on several CD’s that were run through the device and it could not read anything. Very efficient for the price.
